Nesting allows you to nest linear products on different stick lengths to evaluate how much raw material you will need to manufacture the parts on your quote. This article will help you to:
- Understand different nesting methods available in SecturaFAB
- Create and View Nests for Linear Parts
- Define Nesting Parameters
- Understand key terms for Linear Nesting
There are multiple ways to nest a line item on your quoting screen. Learn more about the nesting options in our resource center. To start linear nesting create line items through either the "Long Button" or "CAD Import."
1. After creating your line item, select the "Nest" tab on the line item, then select the "Nest Item."
2. Select "Nest" from the global action menu. Then, select your ideal nest option. These options include:
- Nest – Nests each line item in the quote individually in their own nests.
- Single Part Nest – Nests each line item in the quote individually in their own nests.
- Multi Part Nest – Nests all line items in the quote together based on material thickness and material type.
- Multi Part Nest - Selected Items – Nests any highlighted line items together based on material and material type.
- Best Sheet - Nests all line items in the quote together based on material thickness and material type with the highest optimization of material possible.
- Best Sheet – Selected Items - Nests any highlighted line items together based on material and material type with the highest optimization of material possible.
- Clear Nest – Clears all nests.
3. View the nested results by selecting "Nested Results" or select the "Nest" tab when creating your nest.
4. The nest will appear in the nested view screen. Each stick used will be denoted on a separate line. Each part is presented in a staggered color pattern of blue and orange.
Let's discover the key terms for linear nesting. They include:
1. Stock Length: The specific stock lengths used to nest your line items. You can modify the specific stock lengths used for nesting in "Quote Details" under "Preferences and Costs"
If you have standardized linear products with SKUs on your tenant, your SKU for your raw material will be listed in "Stock Length."
2. Keep Remnant Default: When unchecked nested linear items will not be cropped. Checked items will be cropped. See more about keep remnant.
3. Chuck: Your cutting tool might have a fixture, clamp or "chuck" that holds your material while you cut. Our nesting engine accounts for the space taken by the chuck. In your nesting window, you can select specific chuck sizes for your nest. Your chuck will be shown in grey on your nesting screen. You can also default chuck size for each equipment through the machine file.
4. Max Bundle: Use the "Max Bundle" feature, you can type in the maximum number of sticks that can be cut at one time.
Other terms include:
Kerf: Kerf is the width of your cutting tool. When nesting linear parts, we factor out the material removed from the stick during the cutting process. For large kerfs, you can see Kerf in red on your nesting screen. Kerf is specific to equipment and can be edited from the equipment's machine file.
